Nigora Goats
Stolas
Abba
Meet Stolas, our distinguished F1 Nigora buck and a cornerstone of our foundation stock at Cohop Homestead.

Born on 4/15/2023, Stolas is now recognized as a proven stud with a fleece that perfectly balances type B characteristics with hints of type A. It is fairly easy to shear and work with while still being soft, yet durable.

Stolas possesses a remarkably laid-back personality, making him an exemplary figure in our breeding program. His ability to get along with anyone is not an understatement. We truly value his temperament and hope to pass it to future kids.

Introducing Abba, a captivating F1 Nigora doe and a key member of our foundation stock at Cohop Homestead.
Born on 3/19/22, Abba impresses with her striking blue eyes and her soft, medium-length type B fleece, which is easy to shear and very soft to the touch.

Now an excellent first-time mom, Abba has recently welcomed triplets and provides ample milk with some to spare, showcasing her natural ability as a nurturing mother. As her kids approach weaning age, we are preparing to commence her first milking sessions, eager to document the quality and quantity of her milk.

We hope that Abba passes her mothering instincts, abundant milk production, and regal demeanor to her kids, further enriching the genetic pool of our cherished Nigora goat family. Her role in our breeding program continues to grow, promising to enhance and sustain the lineage of our Nigora goats at Cohop Homestead.
Looking for perfect Doe
We are still searching for a perfect f2 or higher generation Nigora doe to add to our foundation stock. If you have one that would be a perfect fit, please let us know!
Learn about our breeds
Why did we go with Nigora goats?
We decided to add the Nigora goat to our homestead because they are known to be a good dual-purpose breed, excelling in both dairy and fiber production. Their miniature stature, standing between 19 and 29 inches tall, seemed like a perfect fit for us, especially given our limited space for livestock. Now that we have them, we can confirm that their smaller size does indeed make handling them a breeze.

We've heard that when it comes to dairy production, Nigoras are expected to produce about the same amount of milk as a Nigerian Dwarf goat. The milk is said to be creamy and quite tasty, and breeders are reportedly continually working to improve the Nigora's milking capacity by incorporating stronger milking lines. We're eagerly awaiting our first milking season with them and will be sure to report back on our experience.

One of the unique aspects of Nigora goats is their fiber production. They can yield three different types of fleece: Type A, which is akin to the mohair of the Angora goat; Type B, a fluffy and soft fleece with a medium staple; and Type C, which resembles a cashmere coat, being shorter and incredibly soft. At the moment, we can attest to the quality of the Type B fleece our Nigora goats produce. We've also heard that some Nigoras can yield combination types, such as A/B or B/C.

Caring for our Nigora goats is quite similar to caring for any other goat breed, with the exception of shearing. Depending on the type of fiber and the climate, we've found that shearing for type B only needs to be done once a year. Some fiber types can also be brushed out, typically in the spring when they begin to molt their winter coats.
There's been some debate among breeders about whether or not to disbud Nigora goats. While some prefer to leave the horns intact, others choose to disbud. We personally prefer not to disbud our goats. We appreciate that the American Nigora Goat Breeders Association (ANGBA) standards allow for horned, polled, and disbudded goats.
In conclusion, we can confirm that Nigora goats, with their small size, dual-purpose nature, sweet temperament, and unique fiber production, have been a wonderful addition to our homestead. They are wonderful to work with and easy to manage. Whether you're a small or large-scale farmer, homesteader, fiber artist, or dairy goat enthusiast, we believe you'd find them as delightful as we do.
